That one oxygen-vending, life-giving, food-producing, shade-providing, soil-holding, soul-nurturing, eye-soothing machine. The tree.
Eastern India woke up to a gloomy morning after the cyclone Amphan hit the region on May 20th 2020, with many of our favourite neighbourhood trees thrashed to the ground along with our memories attached to these precious beings. Memories of them as hang-out places, landmarks for tea-stalls, cool shade while waiting for a bus, hanging our leisurely hammocks and moreover, home to biodiversity that helps us survive. Official data suggests that the 'green casualty' post cyclone was more than 5,000 trees in Kolkata only.
The loss of these precious friends and the associated emotional toll gave birth to MyTreebute, an initiative meant to salute and celebrate the beauty of trees and nature. MyTreebute is the occasion to slow down and take time to acknowledge the uniqueness of trees as living beings, especially through poetry which can be a powerful means to chant their magic and open our eyes to nature.
Welcome on a poetic journey, season after season, through verses written by poet citizens paying tribute to their lost tree friends and celebrating their majesty.
