ANTARA is a Non Governmental, Non Profit, Secular, Voluntary and Charitable Society established in 1971 and registered under the West Bengal Societies Registration Act in 1972. For the past 51 years, Antara is engaged in care, treatment and rehabilitation of persons suffering from mental illness, drug addiction and alcoholism. Spread out on a natural and serene setting in the suburbs of Kolkata City, ANTARA is a 200 – bedded Psychiatric facility situated at Antaragram with Indoor & Outdoor Departments, Child GuidanceClinic that caters to the children below the age of 16 years suffering from childhood mental health problems, Detoxification & Rehabilitation Unit, Day Treatment Unit, Satellite Clinics, Community Mental Health Unit and various other Rehabilitation Services. The ever - increasing complexities of modern life are creating more problems for the human mind to cope with. Mental illnesses, including drug addiction are assuming greater proportions as challenging social problems. Antara is a response to this challenge. We strive to extend a helping hand to the man in mental distress. ANTARA has been empanelled under West Bengal Health Scheme and has been recognized as CLASS I Uni-speciality Psychiatric Hospital. Therefore, it was decided to reach out to the patients through Satellite Clinics. Currently ANTARA runs a Satellite Clinic. ▪ Janata Medical Service (Mar Thoma Church), Beck Bagan, Kolkata City. Inpatient Treatment Facilities: ▪ Cathedral Relief Service Ward for the acutely ill Men – (38 Beds) ▪ Armenian Church Ward for the acutely ill Women –(36 Beds) ▪ ICCO Ward for Sub-acute Patients (Women) –(30 Beds) ▪ Mar Thoma Church Ward for Dependency Treatment –(30 Beds) ▪ Friends of Antara- U.K. Ward for Children-(10 Beds) ▪ L.I.C. Ward -(shared & single cabin accommodation)- 18 Beds ▪ Rehabilitation Unit for Men –(20 Beds) ▪ Rehabilitation Unit for Women –(18 Beds) Day Treatment Unit: (Targeted Personal Growth & Development Programme) The patients in this unit stay at their home and attend the Day Treatment Unit from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Individual Counseling, family Counseling and Education, Group Activities, participation in Occupational Therapies, Social Outings etc. are arranged for the patients attending this unit. Community Mental Health Unit: Various Awareness Generation Programmes for the promotion of mental health, prevention of psychiatric disorders, School Mental Health Programmes and Programmes to ensure survival of the needy psychiatric patients and their family members in the community are being implemented by this unit. In the year 2019 ANTARA with the financial support of BFIL covered 67000 households through Mental Health Mass Awareness Programme. Antara has been a beacon of light for 51 years in the field of mental health serving the homeless and destitute with the vision St Mother Teresa had for the city of Kolkata. Today , even as we have embarked a journey of significance, diligently serving every individual admitted at our in- patient facility , we give our utmost not only to treat them but to help them create an identity in society . Antara this far has been sponsoring many patients free of cost and majority of the patients in our out – patient department are given concessions for their treatment and consultation, but it becomes difficult to reach out to a larger number affected.
