Started with a village library in 1945, Bani Mandir took the shape of a non-government voluntary organization in 1973 when it was registered under the West Bengal Societies Registration Act. XXVI of 1961 (No. S/13383/1973-74). It is at the village Khordanahala in its own premises. Its operational spread covers around 60 villages in 07 Gram Panchayat areas of Diamond Harbour Block – II in South 24 Parganas district, West Bengal. Its mission is to attain comprehensive development of rural people, priority to those who are socially challenged and economically underprivileged, irrespective of age, gender, caste, community and religion. Its core objective is to ensure people’s development through advancement in Social, Educational, Cultural, Physical, Economic, Environment and other spheres of quality life & living in a congenial atmosphere. At the apex of the organization, there is a General Body consisting of all of its members. In the Annual General Meeting (AGM), it critically examines the programme performances and the funds utilized during the last financial year, and approve the Action Plan and the Budget for the next financial year. There is a 13-member Governing Body from among its general members and staff, which is the main executive body of the organization. The General Secretary is the Chief Executive Officer under whose leadership, the programme activities are being carried on by a core team of 37 paid staff and volunteers in both administrative and field wings. Some of its major activities are – Creche, Child Sponsorship Programme, Food & Nutrition Support to Orphan/Needy Children and Aged Persons, Elderly Self-Help Groups, Women Empowerment through formation & functioning of Self-Help Groups, Livelihood Support with cycle rickshaw vans, grocery shops, tea-stall, etc. and Rural Environment Development Programme.
